Hi Massimo,

The technique you're using is a good one. Another one I was taught was to find the highest terrain/obstacle with 5nm either side of my planned track and then add 500 ft and round up to the nearest appropriate VFR cruising altitude.

Massimo,

IRL, the only approved methods of vertical navigation on an approach are via WAAS or baro-VNAV. It is highly unlikely the Baron would have baro-VNAV, so if the GNS530 is not WAAS capable then you would be limited to LNAV only minimums.

Re my reference above to using a marine chart to help plan a flight across Long Island Sound, here’s a related observation about the CAT-1 exercise... I don’t believe that a competent flight instructor would approve a flight plan submitted by a student pilot that called for the over-mountain routes...

As to your second question: if the controller gave you the runway crossing instruction with your initial taxi clearance then you do not need further permission from him/her. Yes, best practice is 360's outside of the Bravo until you can get a word in. Also, pull back on the throttle a little if you hear it's busy as you approach SMO/HHR.

It's actually a fantastic question, and one that doesn't have a very consistent answer. The AIM does not address downwind departures specifically and there seems to a large variation in local expectations.
