Re: Recognizing Ken's contribution

My favorite feature of MyFlightRoute is the flight search function for generating a random mission: http://myflightroute.com/input.php?

Re: Help with KBFL approach

To skip the course reversal, you need to be either on vectors to final, on a NoPT segment, or "cleared straight-in." Otherwise, you must do it. In this case, you'd be established on the NoPT segment between AMONT and FASTO, so you'd be expected to continue straight-in. The fact that you do...

Re: Alternate airport

If you divert to an alternate you'll be given a new clearance with a new routing. It won't necessarily be direct, but you don't have to file a new flight plan either. You also don't have to go to your filed alternate. You can divert to wherever makes sense given the current situation. Filing an alte...

Re: Midway 3

Agreed that it's confusing. From the 4s, I interpret it as an initial 100° heading to 2400, then a turn "on course" to the assigned heading, followed by vectors to the first enroute fix. The "initially assigned turn" referred to in the DME/Non-DME section would have to be the tur...

Re: KSNA ILS 20R VOR discrepancy

You might use the PDZ to identify SAGER when you're flying the hold, but again you'd be using it in combination with the localizer itself.

Re: KSNA ILS 20R VOR discrepancy

You should be using the localizer to determine when you're at SAGER in that situation. The SLI and PDZ radials don't intersect at a sharp enough angle to give you any precision at that distance, and you'll be using the localizer to navigate next anyway.

Re: Holds

It's an area pilots tend to misunderstand, probably because unpublished holds happen so rarely in the wild. The cardinal direction given isn't the position of the racetrack relative to the radial, it's the position of the radial or holding course relative to the holding fix. A hold at the SLI VOR on...

Re: MyFlightRoute new search option

Thanks Ken! I like to use the flight search to generate random flights, and for IFR scenarios it'll be nice to be able to rule out airports without approaches.

Re: I can handle navigation, how do I fly the damn plane?

The FAA's Airplane Flying Handbook is a pretty good place to start. It's free: https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/airplane_handbook/media/airplane_flying_handbook.pdf For aircraft specific procedures and techniques, search for a Pilot's Operating Handbook. Most aircr...

Re: SR22 IFR Training

They still have this page on the site, but it wouldn't surprise me if they've discontinued it: http://flythissim.com/simavio-pro.html Air Manager is a promising touchscreen option. There aren't any advanced avionics yet that I'm aware of other than an interface for the X-Plane 430/530, but there's a...
