I-11 question: VCV missed approach

Hey all, the I-11 put a bit of a question in my mind. I passed the exam, so apparently what I did was good enough, but I wanted to get confirmation that this is correct thinking. I flew the VOR/DME RWY 17 down to MDA for a straight-in approach and then level at the MDA until 2.1 DME. Then I went mis...

Re: How to plan a flight to an airport only a few miles away

Sounds like useful advice for a couple of the Alphabet Challenge flights, too. (KONT-KPOC comes to mind).

Re: Automated Radio Check

+1. This would be terrific. Not just to offload most of the radio checks from busy controllers, but to know precisely what I sound like on the radio and adjust accordingly. Am I too close/too far from the mic? Are my speakers leaking into my transmissions? Is it distorted or muffled or noisy or hard...

I-10 postmortem

Hey, just passed my I-10 on the second attempt, and I just want to give props to all you RW instrument pilots out there. Failed the first time because I was getting kicked around in 20-30 knot gusting winds, weather down close to minimums, found out too late that the Aerobask avionics stack doesn't ...

Re: When to request an approach?

That's exactly the exchange I want to avoid. I've heard some approach controllers get a wee bit frustrated with pilots who don't check in with their approach request. ATC: "N314MR, contact SoCal Approach, 128.1." Me: "128.1, 4MR." (change freq) Me: "SoCal Approach, N314MR, l...

Re: So close... after all that...

Well, compared to all the previous rating flights... this was actually the first time I'd sat in a sim-plane for an hour plus flight. Also it felt slow because I was on a timeline (unexpectedly) and had to finish the sim-flight before collecting my girlfriend from her real flight at the airport. Bes...

So close... after all that...

Flew my trusty Panthera up from KBUR to KLAS on the I-5 rating.

Sim crashed turning base for 19R.

Lesson learned: test your scenery before flying a long slow I-rating.

When to request an approach?

Hey, had a question after tonight's flights. I did the I-2 exam and passed, but wasn't happy with how I flew the ILS approach and wanted to do another, so I decided to fly back to KSNA. Getting close to destination, I got a frequency change to 128.1 (I think) and after making the change, was told to...

Re: KSMO-KSAN in lost comms?

I thought about the option of flying MZB-084 to RYAHH and then the approach from there, but the combination of fine print and terrain on the plate dissuaded me. I guessed that the procedure is NA for arrivals eastbound because they don't want you overshooting RYAHH and then having potential terrain ...
