Re: RUC Soundings

Running RUC skew-t outputs for my origin, destination, and a couple of enroute points is a standard part of my r/w VFR flight planning routine (I usually do a thorough self briefing online before I call up wx-brief). I find it to be an indispensable tool. Given where I fly (Pacific Northwest) I rely...

Re: Beyond the I-11? Here's one outta HHR

I flew the route tonight, when all the fields in the area were either IFR or MVFR. It was a bunch of fun. I didn't even mess with the GPS...just did it the old fashioned way, hand-flying with two VORs. SoCal gave me several shortcuts, but I did get to fly the interesting part between SLI and ELB as ...

Re: Missing PE

Best of luck, Colin. For what it's worth, I found the following to be pretty useful in preparing for the oral portion of my checkride. Each examiner and candidate is different, so take it with a big grain of salt. Maybe it's a slightly different angle than the other tools you're using to prepare. ht...

Re: [Jan 10 12p PST] Long Beach ops for "Man caves"

I was on for about 45 minutes, from about 12:10 until 12:55. Several others flying around KLGB too. How did the demo go, Keith?

Re: LAX Bravo Transitions

It's been a couple of years since my V3, so forgive me if any of this is at odds with the requirements of the exercise. But... If I was flying KSNA to KVNY using the Coastal Route, I'd just climb as soon as SoCal lifted any altitude restriction I'd been given on the ground at KSNA, staying a mile or...

Re: Ipad ForeFlight/SkyCharts

I use ForeFlight on every flight, both RW and PE. I have a wi-fi only iPad 2...so no internal GPS. I bought the $99 Dual external GPS and love it for RW flying. I have no experience trying to get the iPad to recognize X-Plane data output as GPS coordinates. I just use ForeFlight for charts and info ...

Carenado Bonanza

Does anyone have experience with the recently (Sept.) released Bonanza F33A from Carenado (for X-Plane)?

Re: Approach to KONT

You're right, the limits of Class D are 5 sm typically, though as Keith says the boundary is as depicted on the chart. Remember that all you need to enter Class D is two-way radio contact with the controlling facility...meaning, the tower controller reads back your call sign. To be safe (per the thr...

Re: Question about flight following

In the real world, I believe it varies quite a lot depending on what the local controllers arrange with the neighboring TRACON or ARTCC. At KOLM where I fly (a class D field, within the Seattle TRACON), for awhile we could ask ground control for a squawk when calling up for taxi...they'd take a minu...
