Re: CAT-1/CAT-2: Airport Error/Utility of Flight Simulation

Re my reference above to using a marine chart to help plan a flight across Long Island Sound, here’s a related observation about the CAT-1 exercise... If I was planning a flight from Océano Airport, there are two pieces of marine, rather than aeronautical, data that I would want. When is low tide an...

Re: Learning to fly IFR

One of the biggest problems I have is with sim flying. I wish I could fly a sim plane as easily as I fly a real plane. My biggest problem is with views. I the real world I just turn my head, not remember what button to push. Ive been at this a while with some improvement but I still find it very fr...

Re: CAT-1/CAT-2: Airport Error/Utility of Flight Simulation

Hi Roger, I am focused on ForeFlight desktop and mobile. It has a significant learning curve and I need to become very proficient at using it. Consequently, I don’t use other apps, such as X-Plane, when their functionality overlaps with ForeFlight. I can’t take X-Plane into a DA-20 with me :) The on...

Re: CAT-1/CAT-2: Airport Error/Utility of Flight Simulation

I have used pilotage (backed up with dead reckoning) many times in the real world using lakes, rivers, topography and especially roads. It absolutely does work in many situations. As someone who is interested only in general aviation, pilotage is my preferred method of navigation. I believe that it...

Re: Flight following to an uncontrolled airport

In reality, airports are a lot easier to see then in the sim. On a "severe clear" day/night one can see the airport 30 or more miles out. You must have some great eye sight! All I can say is all the airports I've ever flow into I couldn't see until about 6-7 mi out, at most. Especially a ...

Re: CAT-1/CAT-2: Airport Error/Utility of Flight Simulation

Thanks RogerW and zerofay32 for your comments.

Further to the basic question raised my earlier post (#9), this has been a very helpful discussion in deciding how I want to use a flight simulator.

Cheers

A rather good analogy for radio navigation in aviation :)

We got rid of it in the marine world years ago. Aviation is a bit slow to catch up, but it’s getting there.

Re: CAT-1/CAT-2: Airport Error/Utility of Flight Simulation

LORAN is a poor example for this argument as it was never fully adopted before promptly becoming obsolete when the military released the GPS signal. Basic navigation skills (Pilotage and Radio navigation) are skills that all pilots should keep up on. While the VOR network is being thinned out in th...

Re: CAT-1/CAT-2: ForeFlight Airport Error

Too much reliance is put on technology, especially a GPS. You do realize that at any time the US military can mess with the accuracy of the satellites and your GPS would become an expensive paperweight. Hi Roger, I come at this as an open ocean and coastal sailor. For many years after GPS became av...

Re: CAT-1: ForeFlight/Garmin Pilot Airport Errors

CAT-1 is a short VFR flight so one can always look out the window. All the CAT Raings 1 - 11 are VFR so I would hope you are following the roads, mountains, and shorelines while doing them. It's all just part of the adventure! :D Roads? Check, but only for roads that stand out, which most don’t. Sh...
