Re: Shortened call signs?

On the topic of US/Canadian ATC differences, I loved 2 things on the occasional RL flight up to Canada: 1) Controllers saying “Roger” after pilot readbacks in flight. A little extra effort but lessens the risk that a pilot mishears the instruction and dials in the wrong course, altitude, etc. 2) SID...

Re: Who is using Foreflight?

I let my Foreflight subscription expire as I transitioned from airplane ownership to sim addiction, and found the Navigraph Ultimate Package (includes Data + Charts) to be a far better value. Full Jeppesen approach and enroute for the entire world for 75 Euros per year, plus seamless integration wit...

Re: IFR enroute planning

Not sure why nobody has replied to your reasonable questions so I will give it a try. Most of my RW experience is in the US but some outside. In the US for flight levels, it is usually not necessary to plan a route entirely on airways. More important is a logical SID to get out and a logical STAR to...

Re: IFR clearance readback etiquette

One thing I do in preparing to copy clearance (as well as holding instructions), is to jot down a sort of template so that I can essentially fill in the blanks as ATC gives my clearance. For example, let's say we're flying from KPSP-KSFO. Knowing all clearances come in CRAFT format, I'll write on m...

Re: [Feb 16 12p-3pm PST] EVENT: Nobody Goes to Fresno 2!

Adding to the chorus of thank you messages... this was my first event as a relatively new PE pilot and it was a blast. Great job all involved - can't wait for the next!

Re: Practicing STARs?

jgoth I might recommend you add on the Western Region for a month or more and try some STARs in the Northwest, where terrain clearance requirements put single engine GA at higher altitudes and receiving a STAR assignment is not uncommon. Also we don’t use TEC routes up here. For example you could fl...

Re: Unable to understand the Russian controller....

Raysot not to undermine your issue but purely as a contrasting data point to help with troubleshooting, I have had no issue hearing or understanding that controller (or any other). My headset is a $100 USB model, nice but not nearly as nice as yours. Certainly there is an accent but the phraseology ...

Re: Never again on PE - share your mistakes

Over 1000 RW hours and 10,000 sim hours but I just committed a bad pilot deviation in my second week on PE. Cleared KSEA visual 34R in a 737. Selected in the FMS but for some reason neglected to select the LOC course as backup for the visual. Mistake number 1. Got the runway in sight but had a bit t...
