Re: Thoughts on flight plan for Check Ride flight...

Terrain awareness, in general, and specifically on that back course approach. There are some gotcha scenarios on that approach involving descending too early. Even if you see the runway environment early, you still need to meet the 1720 minimum at PATER. If you see the VASI somewhere around CAMCO at...

Re: POLL: Realistic feel with unconventional control setting

Hey Jeff, good to see you here! I think you're onto something, but there probably are a number of factors that make each sim setup unique. My home setup uses a really nice PFC yoke which feels great at fairly linear settings on each axis. There's also naturally more centering force on the pitch axis...

Re: VHF Distortion

My students at the flight school would probably not appreciate added distortion on the radio. For learning comms I don't think it'd be helpful. I understand the appeal if the goal is immersion though.

Re: Expect visual...contact when on the LOC

I remember that from Real World Coast to Coast, Keith. My reading of Kilstorm's situation is that he wasn't cleared for the visual yet, only told to expect it.

Re: Expect visual...contact when on the LOC

It's a good practice to tune the ILS or load an instrument approach for guidance on a visual approach, especially at night or in unfamiliar terrain. "Expect the visual...report established on the localizer" doesn't make sense though, unless the localizer was already part of your clearance....

Re: Apologies

I'd treat non-staffed towered airports in the western expansion as I'd treat them after hours in real life. The airspace reverts to Class E or G and you make traffic calls on the CTAF frequency (usually same as tower). If you had done that at KGCN, you would have received a reply on frequency that t...

Re: IFR Flights Using VOR Navigation Only?

I fly that way often on PE. It's more fun and more challenging in my opinion. Like Marcus said, file the appropriate equipment and an appropriate route and you're set.

Re: Strange baro pressure behaviour

I'm thinking you mean the data display showed sea level pressure of 29.47" (not 20.47"). Then it's probably an issue with your weather engine or the data it's getting. Your altimeter would've indicated about 700' too high if you set it to 30.21" in that case.

Re: Overlaying flight path on IFR charts?

ForeFlight+CloudAhoy is a pretty powerful combo for debriefing. Like Shawn said it's really simple with X-Plane, but P3D/FSX might take a little more work.
