Re: Question About Turns > 90 Deg

The rule of thumb I always taught my students was GS/100=NM from the VOR to begin your turn. This alone works fine for low level flying. For higher altitudes the DME includes the slant range from the VOR. FL360=6NM of slant range distance. You must remember to add this distance to your calculated di...

ServInfo Logos (ASQ,NKS,VRD)

For anyone that still uses Servinfo, I created airline profiles and logos for ExpressJet Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Virgin America. To add these profiles first BACKUP your servinfo.dat file. Once that is completed, open servinfo.dat using notepad. Add these lines to the very bottom of the text.....

Re: VFR not flight following radios freqs

There's no requirement to monitor any specific frequency. It's good practice to monitor guard on comm2 (121.5) and to monitor or announce your position on UNICOM for any airports you may be over flying. Monitoring helps build a mental picture of other traffic and adds to your overall situational awa...

Re: last minute runway change while taxing, raining, read it

Real world airline procedures require rebriefing and verifying our takeoff data and departure procedures anytime there is a runway change. This came about mostly because guys were taking off with the wrong runway or departure programmed into the FMS, leading to lateral deviations. Better to learn th...

Re: IFR Flight/Visual approach question

This is a common area of confusion for most pilots. Visual approaches have no published missed. As Anthony said its pretty much up to the tower controller. For reference it is explained in the AIM section 5-4-23.

Re: Enroute L-4 VOR Victor Airway Question

VORs transmit radials on a magnetic course. We know that the earth's magnetic North Pole is constantly moving, so VORs need to be calibrated to compensate for this. According to airnav, OCN has a variation of 15E which was last calculated in 1965. Just as runway numbers sometimes change due to magne...
