No Radio or Comms - Support requested

First, let me say that I love PE. I'm in the 2nd year of my subscription and X-plane just wouldn't be the same without it. It's X-plane's best add-on. I could go on...
After upgrading to client 1.5.3 I haven't been able to get comms (1 or 2). I've tried removing the lastest PE client 1.5.3 and going back to the older version that worked to no avail. This is a description of the behavior I've observed.
1) If I click Plugins -PE - Preferences in either the new client or the old client X-plane crashes (since the upgrade attempt).
2) I can listen to default ATIS but when I connect to PE I hear the first syllable (in the PE ATIS voice) and nothing afterward.
3) ATC can't hear me - I've tried using the PE Receiver to verify this.
4) PE works as expected when I load a legacy copy of X-plane v11.40b.
As I write this post it occurs to me to try downloading the client again, just in case my client was corrupted. If I don't update this post then downloading PE 1.5.3 again did not help. Any suggestions from this community would be appreciated. I'd like to try to resolve this here before sending an email to PE support. Thanks,
