fsx under win8 or win8.1

Post by Mueller »

Dear pilots
I Need to buy a new PC. Which OS to run fsx? Today there are more offers with win8 than with win7. But will fsx run on win8 or win8.1? Will also X-Plane run on win8?
Thanks for giving me directions.

Hi Hans,

FSX will run under both Win 7 and Win 8.1 Their are some tricks that you may have to work thru, mostly having to do with user security settings, but it's not overwhelming. PilotEdge client seems to run seemlessly but you can read the forums for some quirks that people had to work thru. Win 8.1 seems to have gotten some of the quirks out and the install shouldnt be much different than on the Win7 operating system. Win8.0 had a lot of connectivity issues for FSX. You can scan the internet to see for yourself. IF you run into problems in 8.1, post them here and I am sure you will find your solutions. But I dont expect you will have many issues. I'm currently using 8.1.

Cheers!

The most annoying 8/8.1 connectivity issue is that joysticks and other USB equipment get disconnected from FSX or P3D randomly. After much research online, I found the source of the problem.

Had to go into Device Manager for each and every USB hub and device to turn the power saving "feature" off. I think it's worded "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

I made that change about a week ago, and haven't had my controllers drop out since.

I ran head long into the uiautomation fsx problem on Windows 8. Here's some sample links on how to fix.

Otherwise FSX and the PMDG JS41 ran fine for me on Win8. I did not test on Win8.1 but don't see any reason why it should be all that different.

As a note, you can still get PC with Win7. However you will have to look harder for a pre-built PC. Obviously if building your own, there are more options.

However if going the Win7 route my advice is don't wait too long. I read online that Microsoft has stopped making retail packages for Win7. Therefore the Win7 software only packages are being sold from "stock".
