Keith,

I uninstalled my previous version of FSX and kept the Steam Edition. I am now trying to reinstall the PE client, but it says it cannot find a working version of a sim.

Any ideas on how to get PE to find the FSX:SE install?

When you uninstalled the FSX version, it would've toasted the registry keys. So, you'll need to reinstall the steam version to restore the keys, or use one of the FSX registry repair tools.

So I uninstalled both versions of FSX.

Reinstalled FSX:SE, and installed the Simconnect XPACK, got rid of the dll per your instructions, then tried to install the client but I keep getting the same error that it cannot find the sim. I then tried installing the SP1 simconnect and install the PE client to no avail.

Run REGEDIT, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\10.0

Does that exist in your registry? If so, what entries are in there?

The FSX registry does not exist on that path.

The FSX reg is in HKEY CURRENT USER > Software > Microsoft > Microsoft Games > Flight Simulator Steam Edition.

Let me know if you need the entries there

Very interesting. It sounds like they've made an update to the Steam build and it now has its own private registry key.

The good news is that means it is completely independent of a normal FSX installation. The bad news is that our installer needs to be updated to support those keys now as well.

For now, your best bet would be to create the path that I described, then create a key called "SetupPath", with a value of "X:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\FSX" where X:\SteamLibrary is your steam path.

That should allow the installer to find it.

Ok I'll get working on that! And yes there was an update a couple days ago to the SE.
