Hey, how about that, I made the first voice on the recording.

Sadly, that was a flight to KTRK, just before the event, had a family dinner to go to.

What is the high pitched alert tone that is heard in the background, from time to time? Sounds like an inner marker tone.

It's our conflict alert sound.

I was thinking it might be. Does that announce loss of separation, or impending loss, or something else?

it means that a tracked aircraft is getting less than 3nm laterally or 1000ft vertically from another aircraft. It's not a loss of separation, necessarily, depending on whether we're on the hook for separating them in the first place. In almost every case, it's an IFR aircraft getting close to a drone, a tracked VFR aircraft getting close to a drone, a tracked VFR aircraft getting close to another tracked VFR aircraft, or two IFR aircraft where visual separation is being applied. In all of those cases, we're not providing separation, but the scope doesn't know that...so it screams bloody murder.

Whenever I'm flying through N90 (New York TRACON), I often hear the collision alerts going off in the background when controllers talk. The time you really don't want to be hearing it is when the entire TRACON is in IMC.

Keith is just trying to put it politely. In REALITY, it's an alarm bell, that goes off every 43.5481457412 seconds, in order to make sure the controller hasn't fallen asleep!

... well, that is a good thing. ;)

Check on the explanation, Keith.

I could hear it almost constantly whenever I was talking to Keith "Center" Smith. I recognized what it was from watching the two videos of the LAX fly-in during the beta, but I couldn't figure out why it was going off so much.

I remember thinking " God, I hope thats not my fault!"

ahahahah Mark, that's exactly what I thought!

I said "crap, here it is, I did something wrong. I even triggered the alarm!"
