I set up my headset and mic to be able to record audio thru my video camera and made a little video of a flight from KONT to KSNA.
I hope you all enjoy it. This is my first attempt with the ATC audio. I still need to do some tweaking .

Great video Vincent, thanks for sharing! You should make some more of these- they're really great with your setup and all.

In response to your delayed response from Ontario Tower- if you listen to the recordings online, you'll understand what happened. Not only was it busy at the time you were calling, but you were also stepped on during your first 2 calls. I actually thought I responded to you, however I used the incorrect callsign so that added to some of the confusion on both our parts. The primary reason for the delay, however, was traffic calling/needing instructions on other frequencies. As I'm sure you understand, airborne traffic gets priority over traffic on the ground which is why Air Northwest 201 got his approach clearance ahead of a response to your calls.

Good Morning Kevin,

Thanks you for the kind words and your comment on YouTube.

Yes, I thought I was stepped on a few times, no worries. I put that text in the video so that people did not think I was continually calling for take off clearance. I was waiting for ATC to say standby or something, but I have listened closely and cannot hear anything. Yes, part of the transmission at the end of the initial holding short call sounds like 26L, but it did not sound like my callsign. I guess I should have queried if the call was for me or not, but I sided on the not side!! You will notice that when I am handed off I always try to delay my call to ATC a little in case they are talking to someone else. What would be the polite time to wait before making a second or third call to ATC? I guess it is still not a perfect world!!
Keep up the great work, you and your co-workers make me a better pilot everyday.

That's a great thing to do, and certainly a technique you should use in the real world as well as on PilotEdge. Typically about 3-4 seconds should be good enough to make sure there's a hole in the frequency that you can jump in to. There's still a chance you may cut someone off, but that's always a possibility with one-way radio communications.

One thing I have noticed on PE is that I think pilots get a little too comfortable with being the only one of THEIR frequency that they'll tune the frequency and call up right away- banking on the fact that they're the only pilot on that frequency. However, as the network gets busier, I have seen that cause some issues when they are not the only ones on that frequency and they end up cutting off someone's opportunity to read back an instruction.

I think the intervals in which you called Ontario Tower were an appropriate amount of time apart. Some pilots will call 10 seconds apart if they don't get a response initially which can sometimes result in the controller barking back at them to be patient, but I think you were just fine.

Overall, I noticed from the video that you were exercising proper radio etiquette so I don't think you need to change anything.

Vince,

Check out this attenuating dubbing cable from Radio Shack: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=2103841

I used to use a straight through audio cable from my intercom to the mic-in on my camcorder, resulting in over modulated audio like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsXp7IR0u3k (pattern work at CDW, Lincoln Park and Andover, NJ)

I then swapped to the attenuating dubbing cable and now it sounds like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh9o1S5V9Qc (arrival into ATL)

Otherwise, you're in great shape! Thanks for taking the time to post the video.

Thanks for the heads up Keith,
This is the cable I use off of my headset:

and yes, I think I only use a straight through audio cable right now to hook between my headset and camcorder. I will definitely check into the attenuating dubbing cable that you have posted.

Thanks for the input...and here I thought I was so old I knew everything!! LOL!!
