That's classic! I swear they enjoy messing with CAT rating attempts. I filed for VPLMS (Mile Square) on my CAT-10, which all KSNA arrivals were proceeding over, and sure enough I got, "You're clear of Class B, proceed over Huntington Pier, contact tower..."!

Controllers don't formally see your VFR flight plan, so it had no bearing on the instruction that you received. It's SOP to send VFR arrivals over Huntington Beach Pier or Miles Square park depending on the direction from which you are arriving....not based on what you did or didn't file.

I realize your post is tongue in cheek, but controllers really don't have the time to 'mess' with CAT rating attempts. They make up a huge percentage of the flights in what is a very part of the network. The controllers aren't interested in conducting experiments, or rocking the boat. They're just going to work traffic as efficiently as possible and move onto the next aircraft.
