Spatial Disorientation in a Heli

Post by NyyDave »

I decided it was a good time to try my first IMC in a heli on the ILS 20R at KSNA...once I hit hard IMC I got flipped upside down and crashed well short. I wish i had a video, I recorded one but it came out with no actual video just a picture of my set up before hitting the IMC.

10:45 I called up SNA tower

And here's the profile, it reads like an accident report :/

The importance of a consistent and confident instrument scan is paramount :-)

I always find instrument approaches in a Heli actually easier than a fixed wing since you can set the collective for the VS you need to maintain the glidepath and use a bit of trim on the cyclic to maintain a constant IAS
