Hi everyone,
A fellow Cirrus pilot and COPA friend of mine has started putting together some great videos of his RW SoCal flights. I thought how great they would be for my fellow PE users to get a chance to see them, especially considering that ZLA is Russell's home turf and he has a lot of RW experience in this airspace that we spend our time simming in. In one of his videos he's flying the ADAMM TWO out of KVNY on a short IFR flight in IMC to KSNA. Another is an approach on the ILS 20R into KSNA that he sidesteps to 20L for a faster Alaska 737 behind him. What a sharp pilot! Always nice to see that especially from someone flying a cirrus. In my experience they're pretty good, but sometimes terrible hehe. Of course up here we get a LOT of training pilots flying the SR20/22/22T so it's not unexpected that learning is occurring.

On the video of him doing the ILS with AP anomaly - quick reaction to hand fly (some people just think "why's it doing that???"), and then smart decision to cancel and or switch to the short runway. Sounds like someone at the tracon wasn't doing the best job with the sequence as that B738 was a mile behind him when he was touching down on the other runway. Then again he probably pulled power waaaay back to make the short runway work too.

Yes Ryan, Russell is obviously a sharp guy, committed to training, is active on the COPA website and attending the pilot proficiency programs, which sets him apart from the average Cirrus pilot - or any average pilot for that matter. One interesting note is that he recently got his type rating in an Eclipse jet, so he can take it for longer cross-country flights when he needs to go further or higher over the divide. I'm looking forward to seeing some more videos of his local So Cal flights, since they correlate so well with what we fly on PilotEdge.

My real world Cirrus flying is so different than ZLA - that airspace is just intriguing to me. I've flown it a few times RW, back in the 1980's and 90's, and of course a ton of PE time, but it still is just the coolest airspace IMO, and it's neat to be able to watch Russ fly it and take the time to make these videos. I'm a huge fan of Keith's RW VFR and IFR series, because you can always learn so much from just watching other pilots work it.

OK, how jealous can I be of someone that gets their type rating in an Eclipse jet just in case he needs to fly higher & faster than his Cirrus. Love it though! Great vid, thanks for sharing.
