I-11 Paradise Hold North-East right turns 210° in-bound

Post by Hesynergy »

I didn't want to create a new topic since I figured the I-11 rating was a much discussed topic but this is what I found when I searched for "I-11 rating"

"No posts were found because the word i-11 is not contained in any post"

'Nuff about my sucky search attempts...

...when I watched the YouTube flight , departure information, I figured that Paradise Hold would look like this…

Corona obstacle Paradise Hold north-east inbound 210.jpg (186.04 KiB) Viewed 6228 times
not a parallel entry, but a direct entry...please help me correct my thinking.

Thanks, Chas

Just for reference, the hold mentioned in the departure procedure has instructions: "...continue climb in PDZ VORTAC holding pattern (Hold NE, right turns, 210° inbound) to cross PDZ VORTAC at or above..."

The instructions specify that the holding fix is PDZ itself, so your right hand turn would start there. Or in other words, PDZ needs to be at the end of your inbound leg. So to correct your figure, shift the holding pattern NW a bit and it'll be fine. If you look at it that way, it seems that a parallel entry would be appropriate.

If shifted it north-west then I wouldn't be holding north-east, rather south-east wouldn't I?

Chas, the hold you depicted is incorrect. The previous poster is correct, you should start the turn to the outbound leg once you cross over the VOR. In you're case, your inbound leg is not on the radial that was referenced in the holding pattern.

Have you watched the workshop on holding?

Just to add a bit more:

The phrase "hold [compass direction]" indicates which side of the fix is protected. So here, "hold northeast" means that the northeastern side of PDZ is protected.

Several times...and had I been live and online when the vid was made, you would have had a few more questions...

So, I get my Q&A session now I guess...

re-watching it now...

Thanks,

Chas
