CAT 9 example ATC - misprint ?

Post by sono »

On the cat 9 briefing page: https://www.pilotedge.net/pages/cat-09-rating

The transcript section contains the following example atc

Burbank Tower: “Cessna 123AB, Radar contact, contact SOCAL Departure.
N123AB: “Contact SOCAL Departure, Cessna 123AB.”
Switch to SOCAL Departure on 134.20.
N123AB: “SOCAL Approach, Cessna 123AB, 2000 climbing 3500.”
SOCAL Approach: “Cessna 123AB, SOCAL Approach, Burbank altimeter 29.90”
N123AB: “Altimeter 29.90, Cessna 123AB.”

Is approach and departure mixed up - presumably it should all be one or the other ?

Not a typo. The SOCAL TRACON facility can be referred to as "Departure" or "Approach". Departing jets may only speak with 1 TRACON departure sector before climbing into the high center controlled airspace. GA aircraft and TEC routes will stay lower, and after the initial departure controller you may handed off to another SOCAL TRACON controller working a departure/approach freq.

Personally, I call the first controller departure, after that they're all approach. There's really no difference which you choose.

Thank you Scott. So the only issue is one of consistency in the same phase of flight.

By the way if they can be called either approach or departure, and it doesnt matter which, why bother with either ?

e.g Just call up "Socal" !!

I mean, you could say that. I'd equate it to saying to someone "Hey dude" vs "Hey Sono". If I'm not sure which center I'm speaking to, I'll just say "Center, N12345, level 6000" vs "Los Angeles Center..."
