Is it ok to fly a VOR DME approach using GPS?

Post by rhallanger »

I am preparing for my I-7 and have already did a trial flight using my Nav radio for VOR DME. But I also have GPS and the Garmin has lovely approach tools where I can select VOR DME B approach for Avalon on Santa Catalina.

For the test I’ll use the Nav Radio for VOR to get the full experience and demonstrate my nav profiency, but... let’s say going forward on subsequent flights....

Would it be wrong for me to navigate the entire approach using the GPS for the route depicted for VOR DME B approach?

The VOR/DME-B also has another name in the title...GPS-B. So, you are absolutely entitled to fly the whole thing using GPS as the primary source of guidance including the final approach segment.
