Turn to hdg 265

Post by Kilstorm »

Last night I was departing KDEN on a IFR flight west bound off of rwy 35L which is to the east of the main terminal in a Twin Otter. Tower cleared me for take off and assigned me a heading of 265. Now my question is at what point do I make that turn and the reason why I ask is because the STOL aircraft I was flying was able to get off the ground and to an altitude to make the turn rather high off the ground way before I would get to the other end of the rwy and in doing so would have me fly over the terminal which doesnt sound like a good thing. Was it left up to pilot discretion on when to make that turn? I waited until I was at the end of the rwy before making the turn putting me north of the terminal but just curious what others think and if there is a definitive answer on that. I was flying the ROCKI3.RLG SID.
