'Expect visual approach runway X'...

Post by dhplane »

What is the proper procedure to follow when I'm told to expect a visual approach, but I get to the final waypoint in my flight plan and have not received further instructions due to heavy workload on the controller? Should I just continue direct to the airport and wait for further instructions?

This happened to me the other day and I just called the airport in sight and was cleared for the approach, but is there a better way to proceed?

Thanks as always.

The clearance limit is the airport, so after reaching the final waypoint in your route, you would proceed direct to the airport if your navigation equipment permitted it. Otherwise, prior to the waypoint, I would try to sneak in "field in sight" to the controller so they can issue the visual approach clearance.
