Looks like this is an old thread that was recently revived, but speaking of KEUG, it being added has been great for me. There's a lot of flight training out of Eugene so it's good practice prior to a lesson.

So far, all I've done on PE is practice approaches but I plan to do the I-ratings at some point too. I need to pass an IPC by summer 2019 so I'm trying to practice all nearby approaches my instructor can realistically assign.

The I-ratings will be more beneficial as an IFR pilot, memorizing specific approaches vs working through various/unfamiliar situations isn't good but it's what I need to do for the time being. I seem to always mess something up doing the familiar approaches anyway, whether dropping below MDA or blowing through an assigned altitude. I was confident when I signed up for the PE trial a few days ago...

CorNut, I guess you might view repeatedly shooting the local approaches as a stepping stone, but if you're attempting to memorize them all, it seems like an unnecessary step. It should be possible to brief and fly any approach of a given type for the first time, sight-unseen, and fly it correctly. That's the only standard which is safe. Anything short of that represents an actual safety issue if you're flying real world.

What I'm saying is that it's likely that there is room for improvement in your process. Memorization of a procedure is unlikely to be the solution.

The "where am I now, where am I going, and what am I doing next?" mantra, applied vertically and laterally has served me well. I often fly procedures in the real world that I hadn't seen until that point, in IMC...and don't have any issues by using that technique. I hope this helps. I would just hate to see you putting time and energy into a solution which ultimately, doesn't scale. It seems like it would be better to attack the core issue.

It's trying to make order of doing things instinctual again, it's a stepping stone to get back to where I should be. The fact I'm making mistakes on approaches I'm familiar with is why I'm sticking to it. No doubt, flying one approach is the same process as any other, you brief the plate and do what it tells you, all the information is there. My goal is getting back to where I was, then becoming a better pilot. I think a lot of my mistakes have to do with being new to using a simulator, being unfamiliar I fall back a step or 2. I ordered a realsimgear GNS, that'll help a lot, I already have controls and gauges.
