I-4 Question

Question on the "Dealer's Choice" I-4 Rating.

I'm probably overthinking this, but do I:

1) I call up Clearance at SNA and tell them I want to fly the I-4 Rating,
2) ATC gives me my destination, then
3) I plan my route, file an IFR flight plan, then
4) call up Clearance again and copy the actual clearance she gives me?

...or is this all supposed to happen on one radio conversation with SNA Clearance Delivery? I'm not asking where the route might take me, that's part of the fun of this rating.

Thanks for the help,
-Craig

Steps 1-4 are accurate.

Craig, how could it happen in one radio call? You can't file your flight plan until you know the destination, and you can't know the rating destination until you've asked the controller.
