[Mar 12] STARs workshop

Post by Keith Smith »

This video will be uploaded tomorrow or Friday, but for those that attended, there was one significant error in the material. I had said that in the event of lost communications, pilots should comply with the 'expect....' altitudes and speeds. That is incorrect....you should only comply with those if the controller has verbally issued instructions to expect those altitudes in a further clearance. If you do lose comms, only the mandatory altitudes become binding (such as those on the profile, or MEA's).

From the AIM:
1. STAR/RNAV STAR/FMSP procedures may have mandatory speeds and/or crossing altitudes published. Other STARs may have planning information depicted to inform pilots what clearances or restrictions to “expect.” “Expect” altitudes/speeds are not considered STAR/RNAV STAR/FMSP procedures crossing restrictions unless verbally issued by ATC.

NOTE-
The “expect” altitudes/speeds are published so that pilots may have the information for planning purposes. These altitudes/speeds must not be used in the event of lost communications unless ATC has specifically advised the pilot to expect these altitudes/speeds as part of a further clearance.
