VFR FF in Charlie. Del or Gnd?

Post by Kyle.Sanders »

Hey Keith,

I am watching your workshop and I was wondering if you had ever found an answer to the question of who to call first if you are VFR with FF departing a Charlie.

I agree with how Keith explains the probable answer, and I have found in my experience a variety of ways in which this procedure should be handled. At ISP, for example, it is in the ATIS to call Delivery for all VFR requests.

In my opinion, the best way to answer this question is to call an FBO on the field of the airport to which you intend on flying and ask one of the locals how it is done. Through regular practice, they will know what is the preferred method. I have called many FBO's and flight schools at various airports and found out some very good and useful information throughout the years. In addition, I have spoken with many ATC facilities which has also been a very rewarding experience.

Great! Thanks!

I am about to watch the second part of that workshop concerning Bravo. If it is not included with that video, is it common to hear "VFR departures, contact GND control for requests"?

At that time, GND could issue a taxi and a squawk along with any other standard VFR procedures for that area "Maintain VFR at or below 2,500" ect… and will not have to tie up the DEL freq and wait for the many IFRs out of that airport.

Would this be appropriate?

Honestly, I am not familiar with any Class Bravo airport that would issue the clearance on Ground. In my opinion, Delivery would not be nearly as busy as Ground and would therefore be the standard go-to for all clearances (remember, you need an actual clearance out of a Bravo airport, not just departure instructions like out of a Charlie). In this case, I would always call Delivery first unless there was something very specific in the ATIS that tells you to do otherwise.
