Alphabet Challenge Leg 15 KONT - KPOC

Pilots,

Sheesh. Why put such a silly short flight into this challenge at all? I mean peace of cake what could go wrong in 9NM fllight! Yes, you guessed it. Plenty.

Lessons Learned:
Flying short isn't flying easy: Ok, so I told myself that this was really a short hop so don't get too high. What did I do? I got too high. I had a plan to fly at 2500 - which is plenty high, but I envisioned my King Air brushing over the tops of McDonald's below so I said, ok 3000. Mistake. What I neglected was how much time I would spend visually ZOOOOMING in to see the airport (again) in increasing anxiety. (It was hiding behind the captains window "panel"! at 10 o'clock). That and the brain power it takes to coordinate talking to the controllers etc on an Up-Down flight. And KONT tower was very helpful by not sending me to approach to then have to switch to KPOC tower. Still I had issues. :(

Anyway I finally SAW the darn field at 3000MSL and probably 2 miles. So of course I did the right thing and went around...of course I didn't, I dropped gear and flaps and entered a Slip and came crashing down. Even that wasn't enough and I conceded at 50 ft agl midfield and then did what I should have done and went around for a nice easy landing.

You might even consider NOT raising your gear on departure. Seriously. Especially if you are in a C172. :)

Todd:

You're killing me with these writeups! I'm way behind (work and life has gotten in the way of simflights) so I'm flying vicariously through these descriptions. That short flight looks hilarious!

Thanks! I have YOU to blame/thank for suggesting we document these things. Get out there and fly. Read ahead to save yourself a lot of grief :)

Did this one a while back, and did it VFR (of course!) in a PA38, Piper Tomahawk. That''s a plane I frequently flew in the RW some years ago, and Carenado's X-Plane version is pretty life-like. Haven't been able to apply myself to the Challenge for a while, but should get going again shortly.

Need some PE / PE Aware advice. To make this leg a little more interesting, I'd like to take off from KONT and proceed on the ODP (or vectors) to PDZ and fly the full ILS 26R KONT from PDZ, with the ODP hold if needed, and after a low approach or touch and go, proceed to KPOC for a full stop. So, RW, I'd ask CLNC for VFR departure instructions for the practice ILS and airborne I'd advise approach or tower that I'll proceed VFR to KPOC after the approach. All assumes VFR weather of course. How should I file this for PE and will PE Aware capture it as a flight from KONT to KPOC for the challenge?
Thanks in advance,
Bruce

I just completed the I-10 and was disappointed to see that PEaware did not register the flight as the flight included a missed at my filed arrival KSMX to the alternate KSBP.

I suspect unless you actually land at your primary flight plan field it will not register as a complete flight rendering the log used for the challenge N/A

Just BTW, it worked great to file VFR KONT KPOC, ask for the practice ILS26R KONT then terminate approach with touch & go and VFR direct to KPOC. PE Aware recorded the whole flight perfectly as KONT to KPOC. Thanks once again to the controllers for a great flight.
