Controller Kudos

Post by RFiery »

For the controllers working Sunday Night 1/29/12.

I was flying the GPS 17 approach into Yuma with a clearance to the CAZZI IAF. There is a hold at CAZZI that you are required to fly if you are cleared for the approach, but not if you are being vectored to final. It can be confusing in the real world as controllers may expect you to just turn to final at CAZZI even after clearing you for the approach. Advice that I read recently, on this sometimes subtle point, in IFR magazine suggested that you clarify with the controller what your intentions are for the hold just to avoid confusion. I was just about to check in with the controller manning LA center and suggest I fly the full approach when he called and asked me whether I wanted to fly the hold or take vectors and turn final. I was impressed to get the call. Very nicely done.

Also, I called in as "unfamiliar" for Yuma ground and the controller did a nice job explaining where to find the GA parking ramp. Again very real-world.

Nice job guys!
