Announcing PEaware

Post by Keith Smith »

While the live map is a great tool for analyzing flights in real time, there is obviously great utility to be had in being able to review past flights, too.

PilotEdge is pleased to announce the general release of PEaware, a comprehensive flight tracking and analysis site. Users of VATSIM will immediately recognize the interface from the popular vataware site.

The site is easy to use, and requires little explanation. However, there are two important things to know:
- since we haven't implemented unique username/passwords, users haven't had their own unique ID (such as the vatsim CID). For the purposes of flight tracking, I am now generated an ID which is based on the name that you use when connected to the network. If you'd like all of your flights to be tagged with one account, then make sure you don't change your username (not that there would be much reason to do so).

- PEaware only tracks flights that have a progress strip associated with them. Strips are created if you a) call for flight following on a VFR flight, or b) conduct a flight under IFR (either by filing an IFR flight plan, or by simply calling to request IFR while on the ground with the controller). If you connect to the network and blast off under VFR without any interaction with ATC, then a strip will not be created, and PEaware will not track your flight. This is how flightaware.com works, too.

Thanks to Tim Krajcar for bringing his wonderful application to our environment, it will be an invaluable tool as we move forward. Thanks also to Ian Elchitz for running the best route site on the net, simroutes.com. His application provides the graphical representation of the FILED/CLEARED route, which is superimposed over the actual route of flight.

You can reach the app via:
1) a soon-to-be-published link in the main nav bar on PE,
2) the real-time pilot status pages (click on the callsign or name of a pilot)
3) and lastly, from the real-time map, by clicking on a pilot's aircraft and then clicking on the name or callsign from the pop-up marker.

So glad to see this is available and glad Tim is on board.

I did, however, get an error. Should i post it here?

Sure thing. Was it 'no data found for this userid' or something along those lines?

That happens if you click on a pilot who hasn't filed ifr or picked up flight following since peaware started tracking.

Note: there is a known issue with callsign searching having problems in some instances. Tim is looking into this.

All set. Any other errors, please post. Might not be able to fix EVERYTHING since this was a simple port, and there's much more coming down the road, but I can at least take a look.
