First PE Flight - Runway "Conflict" at L52
First PE Flight - Runway "Conflict" at L52
On my very first flight last Saturday afternoon, while taxiing along the parallel for RWY 29 at L52, a "172" announced on CTAF that he was taking off on 29. As he pulled onto the runway, I looked out and saw an aircraft on short final! "Aircraft departing Oceano, you have an aircraft on final RIGHT behind you!". The other aircraft landed right on top of the departing aircraft. If he had slammed on the brakes he would have been OK. Oops. Crazy way to start out on PE.

This emphasizes the importance of visually checking for traffic at uncontrolled airports. Don't forget to check the base legs as well as final for landing aircraft. Aircraft aren't required to have radios to operate at uncontrolled airports, and drones simulate these non-radio or non-reporting aircraft.

Yes indeed. Not everyone makes those traffic calls!
