I took the I3 test the other day and encountered a situation that I didn't know quite how to handle. I was being vectored to the approach for ILS Rwy 8 KBUR and directed to fly 050. As I proceeded I was north of IAF Silex. I was then directed to "Join Runway 8 localizer." My situational awareness was good so I knew I could not do that on my 050 heading, so I interpreted it to mean I could turn at my discretion to intercept the localizer. But I was expecting to get another vector of something like 110 before getting the 'join' direction from ATC. Question: Is this a normal ATC direction? Did I respond correctly? Should I have asked to turn toward the localizer radial?
Thanks,
Sally

Re: Vector to approach question
That is unusual. If the last assigned heading is not going to have you intercept the localizer, then I would question it immediately. You should not be left to come up with your own intercept angle.
