Sorry for asking a question I'm sure was answered or explained somewhere before, but can someone please explain exactly what a repeater is. I've read that it has something to do with hearing a controller but not the pilot. In this case today, I'm tuned to a ground freq at one airport and I hear a tower controller from a different airport. I understand this is a simulation and can't mimic real world radios perfectly, but I would like to know what to expect.

In real world I hear calls on the CTAF from distant airports because they share the same freq., but never heard a tower controller from a distant airport while tuned to ground at another.
