Real World: IFR clearances no longer with FSS

Post by Kevin_atc »

I feel like this wasn’t publicized very well by the FAA, but starting today, real-world IFR clearances and cancellations will now go through FAA TRACON or Center Flight Data Specialists rather than Flight Service Specialists.

Thanks! I’m not quite clear on what this change implies for us at PE. To request IFR clearance on the ground at a non-towered airport, we should use 122.2 instead of tracon (dep/app) from now on?

There's no change for PE...however for several months now the proper protocol has been to call on 122.2 at uncontrolled fields on PE. So if you haven't been doing that, you may start now.

P.S. Get back on instagram! We miss your great posts/videos!

Tim, using the tracon/center freq from non-towered airports is not going to work in most places as a result of the refined line of sight communication changes, coupled with removing the 'boost' that was being applied to tracon and center transmitters to allow planes to communicate from the ground. Instead, use 122.20, which isn't range limited as long as you're not moving. The closer you get to 30kts, the worse 122.20 will sound :)
