While circling Meadows Field (KBFL), there was an incredible fog in the valley. I was working on my Cat 5 and was circling the airport about 15nm out trying to wait out the fog. I had to use the lavatory so I was AFK for a few minutes. Should I inform ATC of my intentions of when I have to leave my "flight deck"? I'm afraid of missing a call.

Yep, just tell them you need to step away for a minute or two, they'll normally say, "advise when back." This way, they not to try to reach you during your absence.
