During my Staycation coming up at the end of the month, I'm thinking of doing a Oz rally flight in the A2A Civilian Mustang and tour all the Payware Oz fields (with the exception of YMAV). Would start at YPJT fly north to Broome then Alice, up to Cairns and down the East coast to end in Melbourne.
Couple of things about the flight.
1) I will use real weather. OPUS
2) I wont use real time but set the time so I start before sunrise to where I arrive at Broome shortly after sunrise.
3) I will use FSEconomy to log each leg.
4) I will do a full stop landing at each airport.
5) I will do it on Pilots Edge and use the CTAF freq (in the event anyone wants to join in during any of the legs or talk on the Radio)
6) I will not use the GPS but only NDB's and VFR for navigation.
7) I will behind the controls every second of the flight and only "get out of the plane" when on the ground at an airport.
Heres my route I have planned:

Re: Oz Rally Flight
Edit the subject, put a date on the flight, and I'll move the thread to the 'fly with me' forum, that's what it's for.
Re: Oz Rally Flight
Sounds like fun. Although it might be a little strange to hear SoCal ATC as you fly
But shouldn't you post this on the 'Fly With Me' board...?

Re: Oz Rally Flight
Cyrus, why would you hear any Socal ATC on PE while flying in Australia?
As I said above, if he puts a date on it, I'll move it to the fly-ins forum. We don't actively encourage fly-outs that are outside of the coverage area, but we'll see how it goes.

DOH! I have no idea, actually. Bad assumption / brain fart on my part. Now that you mention it, I recall you saying that what we hear mimics the real world, in the sense that it is related to the distance from a controller/airport.Keith Smith wrote:Cyrus, why would you hear any Socal ATC on PE while flying in Australia?
But then again, don't folks on the ground at SFO hear a SAN ground controller, for example? Sorry.... I'm sure I'm mixing up different technical aspects and functions of the network here.......

Re: Oz Rally Flight
I plan on doing it some time between Feb 21st and March 1st. Just going to play the local weather and do it on a ugly weather day here outside so I dont feel bad about sitting inside all day on the computer.

Re: Oz Rally Flight
They're tuned to San Francisco Ground. They're hearing the same person who works San Francisco ground also working San Diego Ground because one person is working those positions. At the end of the day, though, they're receiving a signal from a transmitter that's less than 1 mile away. If you actually tried to tune to San Diego Ground while in San Francisco, you wouldn't be able to hear the transmission. But then again, don't folks on the ground at SFO hear a SAN ground controller, for example?
In fact, if you attempted to tune SAN ground (123.90) from SFO, the closest transmitter on that frequency would be the Buchanan Airport (KCCR) tower transmitter, which, at ground level, is likely to be unreachable from SFO, so you should hear silence (plus we don't cover that airport in any case).
Re: Oz Rally Flight
Got it, thanks.

Brilliant. Especially since it is in my stomping ground. Hope you cop a 50C in the shade landing/takeoff in the outback. You're even going to my home airport. Mind you, I would be in the 8i, so would just be following, but you picked some nice strips. Unfortunately got to go to YBUD actually, to pick up the other half coming back from Malaysia. Hope you get lots of takers, and record a few vids for those of us who can't make it.
