[Sept 24 | Saturday 4PM ]Rancho Rage Roll-Out

Post by FSwind »

When: 9/27/2016 4 PM PDT | Where: 46CA | Why: “A question you will ask yourself after your first landing at Rancho”
Pre-Amble:
So what is a Rancho Rage Roll-Out, well it is the 3 R’s of the Rancho Airliner Landing competition that will be happening at the wonderfully challenging airport of Rancho Vallecito (46CA). What is so challenging about an untowered airport, well the terrain in this case. Landing Runway 10 as the wonderful owner decided has a mountain right before the start of runway 10. This means you have 1-2 miles to drop 1,000 feet. The key to landing at Rancho is to first understand your plane and pick the approaches that best fits your plane. One approach style goes between the two mountains, hang a left and then punch it right to line up with the runway (Double Hook Visual). The second approach is the straight into the Ranch (Rocky Visual), where you just pick off a couple trees and dive, dive, dive down and hopefully flare in time to make it a nice smooth landing on Runway 10. But after you flew a perfect approach, the trick is not only getting it centered on the 20 foot wide runway but to also to it stopped before you run out of tarmac (Full length is 2500 ft). Rancho has seen its fair share of broken planes, so they are quite capable of fixing any plane (or clearing the runway quickly). If you need to take off you need to back taxi runway 28 and take of facing the granite mountains. So build speed, and prep for the 2 G pull to keep climbing over the mountain.
Side Note: Depending on Traffic at 46CA this can be a challenge and we might just take the “easy” route and run 10 arrive and depart.

Description:
So let’s get down to the nuts and bolts of this event, since it is a “fly in” you can come in from any airport or pick your plane up at Rancho. I will provide some on course magnetic headings for surrounding airports that will get you close enough to see plane lights and the field. This event just for fun so the winner will of course not get the coveted “PilotEdge Landing Trophy” but instead will get a PNG file giving them a free month of VATSIM or IVAO. If need be a point system one can be created so we can have that gold star on the preverbal fridge.

Those "approach plates" are brilliant. Looking forward to the radio calls.

Xplane users may want to add Heli's scenery pack which includes 46CA.

would be hard to say granite rocks take a left then punch right, so I thought a chart might help the matter and I got a little carried away. :D  :ugeek:

Agree- now if we can find some handy nav aids (JLI) and maybe rig up a VOR approach for those days when the fog has you trapped beneath terrain...
