I'm sure it will work, same way of iPhone earphone with mic. (Already tested by me)
After all is better to say iMac can use passive mic via the combo jack (earphone + mic) AND pre-amplificated mic via line-in jack.
Have to consider that headphone jack can use optical line (SPDF) too.
Ps: apple is better but....don't tell anyone
