I'm looking forward to this one...we're going to review a truckload of approach plates, back to back, using approaches suggested by the participants in the workshop.
The goal is to become comfortable with looking at an approach plate, extracting the necessary data being prepared to fly it with a high degree of confidence in a relatively short period of time.
The best way to do that, I believe, is to practice reviewing a lot of different approach plates to get a feel for the varied ways in which they can be built.

Here's couple of gotchas on a localizer approach...
http://skyvector.com/files/tpp/1304/pdf/05883LD36.PDF
My home field (KOLV) LOC/DME 36. Notice that VOSFY is the IAF, and that it's 17 DME from HLI.
Problem is, that even though HLI is shown on the plate, the radial that VOSFY is located on isn't.
You have to look at the Low Alt chart to find that VOSFY is located on the 222 radial!
And, just in case you need another reason to stay above the straight-in minimums (760')...
Notice that 697' tower just a hair right of course, and just off the runway threshold!
