UPDATE: I got this working by deselecting the option in FSUIPC "Control to repeat while held". Repeating the control was the likely culprit as it now works without issue.
The same thing is happening to me. The PE client shows a successful connection, then:
[ERROR] Protocol error:
Disconnected from server
[ERROR] Protocol error:
Then a "Status" message dialog box that says:
"An error occurred connecting to the Air Traffic Control server".
I've been using the previous client for a little over a month without issue. I also upgraded to the latest FSUIPC (4.934) to see if that might solve the problem. It hasn't.

I was about to post the same suggestion here that I suggested in the other thread, which was to make sure it's not sending the command repeatedly. It's triggering the 'connect/disconnect' shortcut.
