for what it's worth, until just recently, many software titles required that you keep the cd in the computer just to play the game/run the software.

alternatively, you can buy x-plane through steam, which will give you the ability to download directly, and then verifies your purchase over the internet instead of using disc 1.

X-plane 9 wouldn't come out of demo mode when you first started the software unless you had disc one in, so it actually sounds like xp10 is a little more relaxed on this requirement.

I bought the usb key, and haven't looked back...

it's less ridiculous when you realize how many people pirate software, and how it restricts the ability for software developers to earn an income.

keith thats true, but u cannot spect to use a software and have the cd around all your life ,,,cds are not permanent if you loose it or damage it, u cannot longer use the software? , thats my point, im shsure there its a better way to protect it....

for legal copies like mine they should give the key u say, as flyelite does.....

you all defend xplane a lot, but this feature its really annoying...

falopz, for what it is worth I agree that requiring the disk is very annoying. I also understand that Laminar is trying to prevent piracy to some extent.

The problem is that preventing piracy via DRM (requiring the disk or whatever) simply doesn't work. It punishes your paying users, while not actually stopping piracy to any noticeable extent. Piracy sucks, the fact that people steal software sucks... DRM is not the way to solve the issue.

Alas, Laminar has decided to go with the DVD checks so paying users just have to deal with it.

Actually, if you lose or damage your Disc 1, you can contact Laminar and explain your dilemma and they will most likely replace it for you. At least they did for me a few years ago with V9. Of course, I had purchased my original set of X-Plane discs directly from Laminar in the first place so I was in their database.

With that said, I do own the USB keys for both V9 and V10 and I love that convenience. Plug them into a hub and forget them!

steven as you say i think they should provide the key with the original purchase, not to make you buy 2 times,,,,,

flyelite gives you the key when you buy the software,

i dont live in usa, so make 2 purchases make it unpracrical and expensive.....

from a customer point of view i think they should try a way to controll the software without that insert disk 1 think,,,,

i repeat i lose a cd, i live overseas getting a cd can take 2 weeks.....

we all do not live in first world countries....
