Bought my first plane - N105JH

Post by Kerbo »

I finally got the cash to purchase my own plane. It's a nice little Cessna 206 Stationair I found in Missouri for $250,000. I'll be ferrying it out to SoCal for use on PilotEdge and am documenting that journey on YouTube. The playlist is here if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... 3-QpfMFcu_

I've made it over to Albuquerque, NM which is about halfway through the journey. More videos are being added to the playlist as I have time to edit them.

Kerbo,

This is really good stuff, for reasons beyond what you probably realize :)

PilotEdge is involved in an initiative to take a fresh look at how people experience aviation. This includes traditional private/instrument training, of course, but also include the sim pilot community, the airline training community and everything in between.

Below is an email I just sent to the members of that group leading up to our monthly status call tomorrow. I thought I'd share it here, too:
Another interesting video here. Stick with it for 10 minutes, up until the overlay of the map with the external flyby: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeMVzEr ... u_&index=1

Some context and thoughts:
- Kerbo is a PilotEdge user who just bought an aircraft on FSEconomy that's located in Missouri. He now needs to ferry it over to Socal so he can fly it with ATC coverage. He's decided to document this trip.

- isn't it amazing how much effort he's put into documenting and sharing what you'd think would be a really boring long XC trip in a Cessna 206?

- isn't it amazing and cool that he takes the time in post production to add comments like, "fly the airplane!" when he's 180 degrees off course with the autopilot fully engaged? He even took the time to show the moving map along the sectional chart at the 10min mark.

- he fails to recall that the 206 he bought in FSEconomy does NOT have a GPS. So, the FSEconomy plugin is actually disabling his GPS (the plugin and/or X-Plane should be completely disabling the stock Garmin 530, but the result is eventually the same, he realizes he needs to be tuning some VORs)

- as a viewer, if you're paying attention, it's hard not to yell at the screen and wish you could be there with him live to work through the issues, but it's satisfying to see him get there eventually.

This video shows the enthusiasm of the sim pilot community and demonstrates the power of scenario-based training along with mission-generating systems such as FSEconomy. He is ferrying his plane to Socal, but he's finding west-bound jobs along the way to generate some virtual $$$, too.

It also gives you an idea what COULD be done with remote coaching/mentoring. Imagine if he'd had a mentor along with him on that flight? The learning opportunities would've been astounding and not too far removed from what he would've learned had he done this in the real world (at a ridiculously high price point, mind you). When he was done, he'd wanna post that flight and share it with the community so they could review it and cheer him along as well.
Great stuff, man. You and all the people who post videos of your sim adventures (with or without PilotEdge) are highlighting just what is possible to achieve through PC-based simulation at home. We can't reveal the full vision for the venture just yet but I think everyone's going to be pretty pumped when we do! I can say this...it's astounding how much training benefit people are realizing from their sims at home already, engaging in what is essentially adhoc, self-directed study. What we're trying to do is provide a lot more support, engagement and structure around that process.

It's going to be killer.

Wow, I never thought my fumbling around in the air could be helpful in that regard.

Note to self: learn to fly better, people might actually watch your videos

Quite the contrary, had it been a perfect video, there would've been a lot less to talk about.

Today I made it down to Scottsdale, AZ. That's about 100nm away from PilotEdge coverage area. Yay! :) The next hop is KSDL-KTRM which will put me just down the road from Palm Springs.

Nice work Kerbo. I have to get very sharp on my VOR skills before I rent your plane. I hope your in the PE area by now.

I picked up a GPS along the way. Found an FBO that only charged 5% (most are 20-30%) so all good now. Not that brushing up on VOR skills is a bad thing.
