big changes proposed for ATDs

This may be tough to follow, but if you own or have access to a certified Aviation Training Device (ATD) either at your home or flight school, this document is worth a read:

They are proposing to remove the requirement for an instructor to be present when using an ATD to maintain legal IFR currency. This was in the preamble for the regs years ago, but never made it into the final regulation. They're looking to fix that (among a lot of other changes, too).

This will absolutely increase the utility of having a BATD at home. Really good stuff. Let's see how it goes.
