New John Wayne Scenery for FS9

Post by Andrew Doubleday »

Hey all, figured I'd share a few screenshots for those FS9 users out there with some new John Wayne Scenery that came out this past month by MK Studios:

I did some flying this afternoon on PE and took some screenshots of this combined with the Mega Scenery SoCal (click links for full sized images):

Awesome scenery, and I really like that livery on the 172. Thanks for sharing.

I wish XPlane had such good scenery.

Jeff,

Wait for the autogen in V10. You'll quickly see why satellite imagery isn't the way of the future with flight sim scenery :)

No denying that the terminal looked great in this, though! It's coming, don't worry.

Keith,

I've seen some screenshots of XP10's autogen and it does look very good. But high-res satellite imagery, especially with some correctly-placed 3D structures is hard to beat for immersive visuals, at least for someone who is familiar with the area.

I sense a XP vs FS "sceneryoff" in the near future 8-)

Jeff, I know what you're saying, but I have to disagree. Satellite imagery always, and I mean _always_ falls apart when you get down low. The juxtaposition of 3d buildings on top of 2d satellite imagery just destroys the suspension of disbelief for me (down low, that is. Up high, you can get away from it because from high altitude, 2d/3d makes less difference).

I was so excited to install Bay Area satellite imagery years ago, and loved seeing it from 6k and above, but below that, I soon found that I preferred having generic 2d textures and 3d buildings than perfectly accurate 2d satellite photos.

I've had the pleasure of trying XP10 with the native V10 scenery and the result is pretty stunning. It's a fully 'plausible' 3d world from the ground up (as Austin likes to say). No more 'baked in' lighting, EVERYTHING is dynamic. That makes for a powerful, powerful visual system where everything is consistent, rather than a mix of 2d satellite imagery and 3d buildings.

It's certainly a subjective call though, and without a doubt, to each, his own :)

I'll be getting ver10 either way, so I'll reserve judgement on the autogen until I've seen it first-hand. I just wish/hope there'll be a way to mimic the layout of freeways as they're such a major visual reference for VFR flying (in my admittedly limited RW flying experience).

Sorry for the XPlane threadjack Andrew!

As far as I know XPLANE has always been accurate in regards to roads.

Oh, wow - well look at that, you're right!

I've been running custom scenery for so long and just automatically turned off roads, that I never gave them a fair chance. Just turned them on and viola, there's the 405 and 105 right by LAX as they should be.
