Short for "Southern California"

Post by Calvin Waterbury »

I was introduced to the ZLA airspace a number of years ago as "SOCAL" which made a lot of sense to me. Since then I have seen it in print as...
- SoCal
- Socal
- socal

Just for the tally books, is there a "correct" abbreviated representation?

Not that I'm aware of. I normally use SoCal with an unfamiliar audience. Among controllers, I will just use all lowercase.

Apparently, it's this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_California

In some ways it makes sense to make the 'c' a capital letter, since it's talking about a name(both words are part of a name, so even more so).

I've always used CamelCase (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CamelCase) when I shove two words together. So, I generally say SoCal or NorCal.

Very cool, I never knew there was a term for that, even after having spent much of my career in advertising graphic design.
