Keith, no to drag the subject but if I start climbing to 6,500' right after clearing Charlie and then proceed as the link below shows, I would be OK?
In other words, can I be at 6,500' way before the COASTAL ROUTE start and request it when getting closer?

Keith,
So my mistake was not the vertical nav, it was my horizontal nav, so to speak. I should have climbed to 6500 earlier. Got it! Thank you!

AJ, your link doesn't work, but you can climb to any altitude you want as long as you're not in the Bravo while you do it.

I got it, thank you, Keith. Cheers, AJ

Successfully flew from SNA to VNY via the Coastal Route. Getting up to 6500 way ahead of time definitely works in this case.
Keith,
Thanks for your help, as always!

Ha! Thanks. I don't recall hearing anyone but the controller tonight.
