That's a great thing to do, and certainly a technique you should use in the real world as well as on PilotEdge. Typically about 3-4 seconds should be good enough to make sure there's a hole in the frequency that you can jump in to. There's still a chance you may cut someone off, but that's always a possibility with one-way radio communications.
One thing I have noticed on PE is that I think pilots get a little too comfortable with being the only one of THEIR frequency that they'll tune the frequency and call up right away- banking on the fact that they're the only pilot on that frequency. However, as the network gets busier, I have seen that cause some issues when they are not the only ones on that frequency and they end up cutting off someone's opportunity to read back an instruction.
I think the intervals in which you called Ontario Tower were an appropriate amount of time apart. Some pilots will call 10 seconds apart if they don't get a response initially which can sometimes result in the controller barking back at them to be patient, but I think you were just fine.
Overall, I noticed from the video that you were exercising proper radio etiquette so I don't think you need to change anything.
