Hey there,

I have a question about the proper phraseology to use when leaving and returning to frequency to get the weather. I often fly a C152 which in the sim only has one radio.
So, I have flight following going VFR from KHAF to KMRY, for example. I'm with Nor Cal Approach and here's the way I think I should phrase it, but I'm not sure if this is right:

"Nor Cal Approach, Cessna 1234AB Request."

"Nor Cal Approach, go ahead."

"Approach, 4AB, request frequency change to get the Monterey weather."

"4AB, frequency change approved."

So at this point, I'll dial in the ATIS and get the weather. When I ready to check back in, I'll tune my radio back to approach.

"Nor Cal Approach, Cessna 1234AB, level 3,500 with bravo." (or whatever the weather is)

Is that the right way to do it? Am I missing something, or did I phrase something incorrectly? Apologies if this info is available somewhere else on the PE website.

I think you’re over thinking this. Just keep it simple and don’t cold call if you’re already talking to a controller.

“NorCal, N123 requesting off frequency to get the ATIS.”

and then...

“NorCal, N123 is back with information Delta.”
