That is true, but I am still trying to learn the processes and syntax of instrument flight. Being able to see my clearance, as well as other pilot's clearances helps the learning process.

And actually in the big airliners and international flights, they don't hand copy clearances. Clearances are faxed to them in the cockpit. They have a thermal printer on the island that spits it out so they can manually enter it into the FMS. Kinda cool, eh?

Many large carriers use PDC (Pre Departure Clearance) whereby clearances are transmitted via ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) to the onboard display and printer. It's not really a fax. Some carriers have the ability to upload the route into the FMS without manual route inputs as the dispatcher generates the flightplan and dispatch release.

Adam,

You should consider participating in the PE Pilot Training program. The mystery around TEC routes, altitudes, clearances, how to fly approaches, SIDs and STARs, etc, are all handled in a structured, progressive approach.

You can still see your cleared route on PEAware or on the map if you need it.

I have a quick question, I would like to purchase the Low Enroute charts for the coverage area, I know L-3 and 7 seem to be relevant. Does anyone know which other ones I should get to match the coverage area? Thanks.

You can find the list of charts and other products here: http://aeronav.faa.gov/index.asp?xml=ae ... plications

Pretty much each of those sections are gonna have at least some kind of an index(Or few) files. For example: http://aeronav.faa.gov/content/aeronav/ ... dex_US.jpg

For low en route charts, I recommend having L3/L4, L5/L6, L7/L8 and L9/L10. That will cover you for the ZLA area.
