Obtaining clearance at non towered airports

Yesterday I made another important experience. I wanted to depart California City and tried to obtain clearance From Joshua Departure. All Calls remained unanswered so I decided to take off VFR and get the clearance in the air as I figured I was out of range while on the ground. Fine. Taking off, climbing and calling Departure. And of course I violated the airspace of Mojave, which the Controller pointed out first...

Lesson 1: Look at Charts prior to take off other than planned.
Lesson 2: I remember reading here that there is a frequency that is the equivalent of a mobile to call for clearance when out of range. I was not able to find that and the I-rating From SXC only lists the possibility to call Departure. Am I remembering something wrong?

I've updated the I-7 page to include the reference to 122.20. Prior to the line of sight and terrain code being implemented, the approach freqs worked on the ground, too.
