Airline Practical Tests List

Post by jdzurisin »

Hey guys,

Thought I would start a thread with some part 135 practical tests that can be completed within the PilotEdge airspace for those that are looking to go for interviews in the future. Feel free to add others that you find.

American Eagle:

Take off out of LAX 24R, IP will give you the controls at 80 knots
Positive rate- gear up
1000 feet- flaps up, climb checklist
Level at 3000 feet and maintain 200 knots
Cruise checklist
Proceed direct, or intercept radial to the Seal Beach VOR and hold (ask IP to tune and ident)
Use positive exchange of controls to give him the plane so you can copy holding instructions
Brief the hold entry, if it's correct you may get vectors prior to entering the holding pattern
Vectors to the LAX ILS 24R with the flight director
Slow, approach checklist
Gear down, landing checklist
Fly the missed approach (no visual cues in sight, traffic on the runway, IP says go missed, etc.)
Vectors back around for the ILS 24R via Raw Data to the landing
IP is very helpful acting as the non-flying pilot, use them as much as possible

Have him set heading bugs
Have him tune and indent
With power changes start moving the throttles then have him adjust to final settings

The other is the ILS 5 at FWA. Take off 23 climb to 3000 then turn left 040 to intercept the 180 off of FWA. Track to the VOR then hold NW on the 340 off of FWA standard right hand turns one min legs. I briefed it correctly and didn\'t have to do the hold. After that vectors for the ILS 5. The first one will be with the flight director to a missed. Then back around for another one with out the flight director to a landing.

Horizon Air:

Frasca 142
Configured like a Cessna 421
You will fly the profile given in your technical interview
Intercept/fly victor airways
VOR approach via DME arc
VOR to minimums
Published missed approach, enter the hold
Full ILS approach from the transition
Land
Hints:
The sim is very sensitive
Use small corrections
The approaches will differ, remember to check the weather prior to each approach
Speed control is big- Vr=90, Climb=140, Cruise=180, Gear/flap= 150, Appr=120.
Be fully configured by the FAF
If you are getting behind- ask for vectors or a turn in holding, don't get rushed
Don't get behind sim (ask for another turn in holding or vectors)

Mesaba:

Table top simulator
Similar to Piper Arrow
No HSI, DG and VOR/ILS indication
Yoke has no artificial feel to it at all, fly with fingertips
Some has a right turning tendency
Evaluator
Will give you power settings
Will talk to you during the sim
Simple questions like about your background and experience
Trying to divert attention
If it gets too busy, tell him- it shows good prioritization
Given Approach plate ahead of time to review
Given card to review with power settings and airspeed
Don't forget to change the VOR frequencies during the ride
Start at 500 feet, given a few minutes to get familiar with the sim
Climb to 2000 feet
Steep turns, 45 degrees of bank, left and right
Repositioned a few times and asked where you are in relation to a VOR
Intercept a radial and track it to a VOR
Brief intercept angle, when to turn, what indications will be
Correct brief and usually won't complete intercept o Unpublished hold at another VOR
Brief the correct entry
Brief speed to fly
Again, correct brief and you usually won't have to fly it
Vectored for an ILS approach
Mesaba has changed the Jepp chart so you can't memorize prior it
Brief the approach (don't just read the entire chart)
Don't forget to tune and identify ILS and ADF for the OM
Fly ILS to minimums
Make callouts
Go missed off the ILS
Given radar vectors to an unpublished hold
Hold is over a VOR or the compass locator
Be able to talk about starting time outbound in no DME
Uses the localizer for course guidance
Brief the entry correctly, and you're done
Sometimes you will fly the published missed to the VOR

OmniAir:

Sim was set up as CRJ 700

Takeoff KLAX 24R

Track VOR radial outbound

Fly the Seal Beach VOR transition to intercept ILS 24R LAX

Track radial inbound

Hold

If you brief the hold correctly, you don\'t have to fly it

Intercept initial approach to ILS

ILS to a full stop

Skywest:

ATC 810 or Frasca 142
The usual airports that are used for the simulator evaluation are Los Angeles ILS RWY 24R (KLAX), Burbank ILS RWY 8 (KBUR), and Trenton, NJ ILS RWY 6 (TTN), and possibly Teterboro, NJ (TEB)
They give you basic power settings
No visual
No glass, all round gauges
Know FARS as they pertain to simulator
Non radar= full procedure
DA what do you need to see to continue/to land
Weather required to takeoff, continue approach, land
Given ATIS, is Takeoff alternate required?
When can you descend below decision altitude?
Required radio calls
Ident Navaids
Call for checklists (After T/O, Approach, Landing at a min)
Brief (departure, holding, approach)
Takeoff
Intercept radial
Holding instructions
Vectors to ILS, full procedure
Published missed
At the end the instructor will ask you what you could have done better

UPS:

767 or MD11 fixed base simulator
No motion or visuals
767 has a traditional "six-pack" instrument setup, MD11 is a full glass cockpit
Which sim you get is dependant on availability, so be ready for either
You will be provided with a briefing packet and given 20-30 minutes to review it before your evaluation
The packet will give you required callouts and takeoff/approach procedures for the evaluation
Sim will start out on the runway ready for takeoff.
Your evaluator will act as Pilot Monitoring.
Normal takeoff with climb to 5000' as you intercept and track a radial outbound. Clean up and make the callouts per the briefing package.
After briefly tracking the radial, the evaluator will break you off for steep turns. Plan on doing one in each direction. If your first turn is good they may delete the second.
Plan on constant rate, constant airspeed climbs with a turn. Level off at or above 10,000' and accelerate to 300 kts.
After leveling, you will be given an expedited descent. Don't forget to slow to 250kts leaving 10,000'. Pull the speed brakes.
Repositioned to intercept the ILS. Configure per the briefing package and fly the approach to minimums where the evaluator will freeze the sim and make a note of where you end up.
As you transition between different phases of the evaluation, you will be asked technical questions (see question bank below)

Chautauqua:

PCATD made be ELITE

Set up to have flight characteristics of a Baron

Pitch sensitive- use the trim

Don't over control

RMI, HIS for navigation

Give you a few minutes to look at checklists, airspeeds, approach plate

Use the checklists

Make Callouts

ID Nav-aids

Make radio calls

Always think ahead to what you have to do next

Non radar

Required radio calls

Full procedure approach

Given weather

Given/ read back clearance

Set Bugs, Radios

Takeoff

Vectors for holding (or direct VOR for hold)

Identify VOR and brief hold entry

Direct NDB outer maker for full procedure ILS

Brief approach, Identify NDB

Procedure turn, set inbound course and tune LOC

Glide slope capture, set missed altitude

ILS to minimums

Published missed approach

Engine failure on missed (be careful: it's common to get slow)

Begin engine failure procedure (feather, declare emergency), that's it.

Know FARs as they apply to simulator

MAP on a non precision approach

FAF on precision approach

Use CRM- have instructor set altitudes, bugs, identify navaids

Instructor will ask you basic questions during the sim to try to distract you, be nice, but if you get overloaded, ask him if you can continue the conversation after the sim

They are getting away form doing the engine failure on the missed

FlexJet:

Round dials or glass depending on sim availability
Instructor will assign speeds
Instructor will talk to you during sim for a distraction
Use checklists
Use callouts
Use CRM
Start on taxiway, short of the runway
Brief takeoff (can brief ILS while on the ground as well)
Takeoff
Basic air work- turns, climbs, descents
Some get holding instructions (explain correct procedure and move on)
Vectors to ILS
Repositioned to takeoff runway, 10 knots of crosswind
Takeoff with a V1 cut
Get plane under control in a climb (watch your airspeed)
Level at 2000, flaps up
End of simulator
