Cross BOI 40 miles to the south at 17,000

I am getting into IFR from KMMH to KBOI and filed the flight plan NIKOL2 NIKOL RYANN REO J7 BOI and picked up the clearance enroute. As I was descending into KBOI passed the REO VOR, the controller told me to cross the BOI VOR 40 miles to the south at 17,000. Without a fix or heading, I don't know how to calculate this. I was on V113 at the time just after crossing REO. I was too embarrassed to admit I didn't know how to calculate that so I disconnected and came here.
Where can I learn this?

Most GPS/FMS computers have the capability to add a point in there. However, even without a GPS/FMS, it’s just some basic math taking into account the distance remaining, ground speed and desired descent rate. Pretend you were told to cross the VOR at a certain altitude. Now, subtract 40 miles from that equation and you have your answer.
